about

Ah the good old days...

This was our first attempt to record ourselves in the (then) new digital domain. In our Brooklyn basement rehearsal space we made several attempts over the course of over a year. In fact, this project was begun in the late '90s. We used the microphone pre-amps from my trusty 4-track cassette recorder, with digital conversion provided by the standard sound card that came with my PC. The best mics we had were an sm57 and sm58, with the rest being, well... I don't recall the names of these long-since discarded monstrosities (actually one was a "Sam Ash" mic that came free with a purchase of 10 crappy XLR cables). Needless to say, trying to "fix it in the mix" proved to be difficult and, honestly, futile. When I recently opened the files to remix the album on professional equipment I was appalled to discover all the plug-ins crap with which I'd originally tortured the mix. I put all the tracks into Protools (it had originally been recorded with Cubase), removed all the plug-ins and listened to the tracks relatively dry. It didn't sound so bad! Such is the way you hear the album today, with minimal processing.

about

French New York, New York

French is a punkpoprock band formed in NYC in 1996.
Their songs are as short as they can possibly write them.
Led by songwriter and guitarist Ian James, French has intentionally spurned the music industry and most publicity in general

Their music is a mildly menacing melange of old school punk rock, post-punk, classic rock, and pop, heavy on the guitars.
